Risk of nuclear weapon use is now the highest since the end of Cold War. Northeast Asia is not the exception. In fact, our assessment of 30 possible (plausible) cases illustrate such risks in the region is imminent (see www.recna.nagasaki-u.ac.jp/recna/bd/files/Year_2_NU-NEA_Report_E_2303). Quantitative assessments of possible five cases show that even a small number of nuclear weapons use in the region could result in catastrophic number of deaths and could potentially lead to global nuclear war. The implications for reducing nuclear risks in the region will be discussed based on such assessments.
Tatsujiro SUZUKI is a Vice Director, Professor of Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition at Nagasaki University (RECNA), Japan. Before joining RECNA, he was a Vice Chairman of Japan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) of the Cabinet office from January 2010 to March 2014. He is now a member of Advisory Board of Parliament’s Special Committee on Nuclear Energy since June 2017. He is also a Council Member of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (2007-09 and from 2014~), co-chair of International Panel on Fissile Materials (IPFM) and a member Advisory Panel of Asia Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (APLN). Dr. Suzuki has a PhD in nuclear engineering from Tokyo University (1988).
